“Ball is Life” capped off their undefeated season in dramatic fashion with a walk-off win in the championship match!
Winning their final regular season game by 10 runs, and strolling into the finals after a semi-final victory, “Ball is Life” felt confident and well-rested. Meanwhile “The One Kick Wonders” hoped to ride the momentum from their one-run victory in the semis to championship glory in their third game in less than 2 hours.
The championship match was exciting right out of the gate. "The One Kick Wonders" got on the board first with one run in the top of the 1st inning, only to give up one run in the bottom of the inning. After the 2nd inning, the game sat tied at 2 runs apiece. Relying on well-placed ground balls and aggressive base running, "The One Kick Wonders" took command of the game, plating 2 runs in the top of the third. It seemed that they had all the balls bouncing their way.
"Ball Is Life" found their defensive rhythm, holding "The One Kick Wonders" scoreless over the next 4 innings, and tying the game in the bottom of the 5th with a 2 run double.
Tied at 4 after 7 innings, the game headed into the last inning of regulation. "The One Kick Wonders" broke the game wide open, stringing together infield hits and heads up base running to take a 3 run lead. They were 3 outs away from spoiling an undefeated season for "Ball is Life", and claiming championship glory.
"Ball is Life" bounced back from their disappointment quickly, getting hit after hit to put runners on base and bring them home. With each run, their hope grew, and fatigue was starting to set in for "The One Kick Wonders". With 1 out and runners at the corners, a well-placed sacrifice bunt brought in the tying run, with the game-winning run waiting on second. A booming shot deep to right center fell in for a double, driving in the championship run in dramatic fashion.
After a raucous celebration (and obligatory team photo), the two teams congratulated each other on a hard-fought championship match and a successful kickball season. "Ball is Life" are not resting on their laurels, however, they will return next season to attempt to continue their winning streak and defend their championship.
